Malaysia Sports Betting Issues

The Malaysian sports betting market is fascinating.  Malaysia is crazy about football.  It also has a well-documented underground sports and football gambling market that was documented to be rife with match-fixing in the explosive book by Declan Hill called ‘The Fix’.  Technically even for the legitimate recreational purposes, sports betting in Malaysia is illegal and is punishable by fine or a prison sentence of up to six months.

However, with the development of online betting, it has become easier for most Malaysians to avoid local authorities by betting online with companies that exist in jurisdictions where sports wagering is legal.  Even though it is technically illegal to bet within Malaysia, most reputable international sportsbooks based in Europe or off-shore betting havens accept bettor registrants from Malaysia.  Furthermore, several of them also offer Malaysian Ringgit betting (MYR) accounts.

If you do wish to proceed and begin betting, it best to avoid any sportsbook with a presence in Asia.  If any legal actions are taken against an Asian-based sportsbook, there is no telling if any connection  could be made to their customers once an investigation begins.  All the sports betting companies listed below are located and regulated in the United Kingdom, Canada or offshore where Malaysian authorities have no jurisdiction.  Each site that I list accepts Malaysian customers, is extremely reputable with a long track record of fairness and security.

Malaysia Sports Betting Bonuses

Online sportsbooks often create promotions for free bets or sign-up bonuses.  As a Malaysian customer, you will be eligible for several offers.  However there are rules and restrictions that must be satisfied before you will be able to withdraw your bonus offer as cash.

I recommend that you choose a sportsbook based on how you see yourself playing in terms of banking issues, currency issues and of course how the sportsbook caters to your favourite sports.

However, I understand that bonuses are an issue of interest, so I explain which of my recommended sites have bonus offers and I explain the rules for each site in simple terms.

The best online sports betting sites for Malaysia

Pinnacle Sports operates as a reduced-juice sportsbook.  This means they don’t advertise or offer a sign-up bonus. The savings is passed back to bettors with consistently higher paying odds on all sports, not just football.  A favourite of high-stakes bettors. Read the Pinnacle Sports Malaysia review.

Unibet, headquartered in Sweden, provides some amazing coverage of sports betting, especially with their coverage of niche sports like ice hockey, though football is their top sport.  Read the Unibet Malaysia review.

William Hill is one of the oldest names in sports betting, established in 1934. William Hill covers all sports well, but football is their focus.  They have an excellent site and many betting markets.   Read the William Hill Malaysia review.

Many sports betting services focus their business on your average recreational bettor.  As such, most people only stake small-to-moderate amounts of money.  To protect themselves against very large accumulator bets, many sites will limit the winnings by any one customer to a relatively low amount.

If you are interested in betting larger sums of money that would likely lead to larger wins, you’ll need to know which sites have high limit sports betting.

High Limit

Many of you would like to partake in Ringgit sports betting.  When you bet with Ringgit, you will also need to deposit and withdraw Ringgit.  When this is your preference, the Malaysia sports betting banking methods available to you will be somewhat limited, as few companies support the MYR.

If you prefer another currency or have a funding source in another currency, your banking options will open up immensely.  Whatever you choose, try if possible to bank in the same currency that you will use to bet.  This will save significant fees on currency exchange.

Malaysian Mobile Sports Betting

In terms of mobile betting, each of the sportsbooks listed offers a mobile-optimised website that you may access from within Malaysia.  While many of these sportsbook companies provide mobile apps, they are only available within certain countries as limited by the various ‘app stores’ and thus are not generally available in Malaysia.

Despite this, know that the mobile sites offer a, fast nearly full-featured experience that will allow for in-play betting and offer essentially all available betting markets that are available with the normal desktop version.  Read more about this on the Malaysia mobile sports betting page.

Note that if you intend to use your mobile for betting, ensure that you do so out of plain sight.  As mentioned above, betting is still technically illegal and it is best that you do not overtly flout the laws.

Getting started betting from Malaysia

Once you have registered your account, you will need to deposit funds to get started betting.  If you are interested in betting using the Ringgit, you will need to use an e-wallet provider as e-wallet providers support their own MYR account balances.  If you prefer using a prepaid card solution link Entropay so that you may move money to and from your Entropay card, you will have to select a supported currency like the US Dollar or the Pound.  The ease of this method of transaction may well be worthwhile, but of course you will be aware that there will be currency exchange fees if your original funding source is in the Ringgit.

While European and other non-Asian betting sites are independent of Asian authorities, they are extremely interested in both your account security and the prevention of money laundering and organised crime.  As such, most every credible sportsbook will request documentation before you make any withdrawals.  This is to confirm that you are who you say you are and that you do live where you say you live.  Usually, copies of photo identification is requested, a passport is best, but others may suffice.  In addition, they will also likely request a utility bill of some kind, (power, water, telephone, cable etc.)  This is common procedure for customers around the world, not just from Malaysia.

Your safety when wagering - Use common sense

If you begin betting, ensure to exercise caution.  Remember that if you decide to take part in online betting as operated from foreign, legal jurisdictions your use of them in Malaysia may still be seen as illegal.  Do not openly access their websites at public computer terminals such as in a hotel lobby, Internet cafe or a library.  For your own security, ensure to access these sites whether with mobile or desktop versions, in a private environment.
